A lot of people have been asking me to do an Amazon Prime section so here it is! I didn't use the service much but after people had been telling me about certain shows and movies I decided I'd give it a closer look. Amazon Prime has pretty much every show and movie you can think of but I will just be giving Binge-worth
Seven Psychopaths is a dark comedy directed by Martin McDonagh and stars Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and Colin Ferrell. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a stereotypical writer with an alcohol problem who wants to write a screenplay about seven psychopaths, but he doesn't know who the psychopaths are or what their story is. Marty has a couple of oddball buddies, Hans (Christopher Walken) and Billy (Sam Rockwell), who make a living by kidnapping rich people's dogs, then returning them and collecting the reward. However this time, the fur flies when Hans and Billy kidnap the beloved pooch of a gangster (Woody Harrelson), and Marty uses the ensuing events as fodder for his screenplay. This movie is dark, hilarious, amazingly written and is more than worth a watch.
The Royal Tenenbaums is written and directed by Wes Anderson and stars Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Bill Murray, Gwenyth Paltrow, Owen Wilson, Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, and Danny Glover. This film is the story of a successful yet divided and broken family's unexpected reunion one winter. AS you can expect from a Wes Anderson film this is a work of art and a great film as well. It is dark, funny, and emotional and is for sure worth a watch. I love this film so much that it is one of my first 'movie of the week' ttha you can check out in my 'movie of the week' blog under the 'Movies' section of The Binge.
Midnight in Paris is directed by Woody Allen and stars Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams , and Marion Cotillard. Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is a screenwriter and aspiring novelist vacationing in Paris with his fiancee (Rachel McAdams). He, being much more into the beauty and history of Paris than she is, takes to touring the city alone. On one of the midnight walks, Gil encounters a group of strange -- yet familiar -- revelers, who sweep him along, back in time, for a night with some of the Jazz Age's icons of art and literature. This is a film about so many things, love, marriage, nostalgia, and so much more and finds a way to work. It is some of Woody Allen's best work and is a must watch.
Bone Tomahawk is directed by S. Craig Zahler (Dragged Across Concrete) and stars Kurt Russell and Richard Jenkins. It is a horror-western about 5 men who go out and try to rescue 3 people who were kidnapped by Indians. I know what you're thinking..."A horror-western?! That doesn't sound any good." But somehow Zahler pulled it off and it is a roller coaster of a ride. Its also really funny.
Ready Or Not, a wacky and surprisingly hilarious horror-thriller about a newly wed bride on the run in the haunted mansion of her new husbands rich, crazy family was one of my favorite films of 2019. Read a more in depth review of the film in my 'Top 10 Films of 2019' blog in the 'movies' section of The Binge. It was added to HBO Go in the beginning fo June and is more than worth your time.
The Lighthouse was one of my favorite films of 2019 as well because of Robert Eggers' (The Witch) art direction, and because of how the film was made so professionally with such a small budget. It is a thriller about 2 men's spiral to insanity while stuck in a lighthouse together in the late 19th century. Willem Dafoe, as always was great in the film, but so was Robert Pattinson who is reinvigorating his career from the Twilight films days and is set to play Batman in the 2021 reboot of the franchise.
Plains Trains and Automobiles, is one of the all time best, classic comedies. Steve Martin (Cheaper by the Dozen) and the late John Candy (Vacation, Uncle Buck), two comedy legends, give possibly their funniest performances. Plus, it is directed by the great John Hughes (Weird Science, The Breakfast Club). This film is definitely Binge-worthy.
Hot Summer Nights is no Oscar-winner, but it is a super entertaining and easy film that I can promise 99% of people will enjoy. I say that because the plot about a shy boy (Timothee Chalamet) who moves in with his aunt in 1990's Cape Cod and gets in over his head dealing drugs while also being in a secret relationship with his business partner's sister who doesn't know about their relationship. The performances are great and it brings viewers back (or to) a very different time.
The Big Sick, starring Kumail Nanjiani is one of my favorite rom-coms of all time. The film is about Kumail, a Pakistani comic, living in America, who meets Emily but has to hide their relationship from his family who will only allow him to marry a Pakistani girl of their choosing. When Em ily becomes very sick, he forms a close bond with her parents. Kumail Nanjiani is hilarious and also such a talented actor and this is the role that made him known on the main stream.
The Boys is a Amazon Prime original written by Garth Ennis and Eric Kripke, produced by Seth Rogen, and starring Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Anthony Starr, and Erin Moriarty. The show is sort of a parody on the Marvel Super hero universe because of how the super heroes in The Boys are actually assholes behind the scenes, but it hasn't actually confirmed this. Anyways, it stands on its own two legs and has great writing, solid performances, and will definitely get you excited for its second season coming out at the end of this year.
Season 2 of this amazing show has arrived and I'm sure you've heard about it because this season has a lot more hype than the last one. The second season had a MUCH bigger budget and it is very clear that they used every dime. But, it didn't take away from the emotional side of the show at all. Actually, this season was probably even more emotional. Every episode a huge twist would happen and this season, although I wouldn't say better than the first season, was more entertaining and I watched the whole season of 8 episodes in two weekends. Whatever shows you have on your list right now, watch The Boys. Karl Urban is the MAN. I can't wait for season 3.
Credit to my buddy Asher Saven for suggesting this show for me. A hotel night manager (Tom Hiddleston) with a mysterious past is called by the British Intelligence to infiltrate Richard Roper's crime operation as an undercover spy. However, he also has another conflicting agenda. This 6 episode mini series was a ton of fun. The characters are great, its constantly globe hopping so it looks incredible, and the plot+direction keeps you on your toes at all times.
