HBO MAX is a great streaming service with a wide variety of great films and some of the best tv shows of all time. However, I happen to not be much of a fan of their deal with Warner Bro's where new films come to the streaming service at the same time as theaters. Anyways, here are some great films and series'.
Le Samourai is a classic French crime/drama directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring the Alain Delon as the iconic, cold hit man Jef Costello and his run from the cops after a man witnesses his hit on a nightclub owner. Le Samourai's influence on film is substantial as can be seen in great films that came after such as the Japanese classic The KIller, the 2004 film Collateral, Deniro's Ronin, and many more. The film's cold vibe, mixed with Delon's magnetism even with few words make a 1967 French film that has aged beautifully.
Speed is one of the best action movies of all time and I was so delighted to see its addition to HBO Max. After two police officers (Keanu Reeves and Jeff Daniels) are able to stop a man's (Dennis Hopper) bank heist, he comes back for revenge. Jack (Keanu Reeves) jumps on the bus that the bomber rigged and attempts to find a way to stop it. However, if the bus goes below 50 mph, it will explode. The action scenes are great, the dialogue in the bus is great, Dennis Hopper plays a great villain, and Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock are iconic together. This is rightfully so regarded as one of the greatest action films of all time.
Offered a plea deal by the FBI, William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) infiltrates the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). The lead actors, Stanfield and Kaluuya, both are very worthy of their Oscar nominations. This is a very important movie that is SUPER relevant right now. But in addition to this, it is a super very good, dramatic, and often times thrilling film. Especially if you are like me and know near nothing about the history of The Black Panther Party.
The Matrix trilogy is directed by the Wachowski brothers and stars Keanu Reeves, Cary-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne. This iconic, mind-bending sci fi trilogy is regarded as one of the best for good reason. These films were far ahead of their time and 20 years later, the effects and action hold up very well , but it is the story that makes this movie what it is. I refuse to try to truly explain the plot because if you go in cold like I did the film better lets you into its world. All of the cast is supposed to return in a fourth matrix which is in the works.
The Austin Powers trilogy Is directed by Mike Myers and stars himself, Seth Green, and Verne Troyer (Mini Me) may he rest in peace. Myers' duel performance as detective Powers and Dr. Evil, his nemesis are truly what make these films what they are but they are still overall great spoofs of the James Bond films without insulting them. Ive seen all of them multiple times and belly laugh throughout in each of them.
Side Effects is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta- Jones, and Jude Law. It begins as a routine seeming film, although a very intriguing one about a woman (Mara) who is going through some anxiety and depression due to her Husband (Tatum), returning from Prison. However, midway through the film, a huge twist turns the film into a thriller and mystery and sucks you right into it. After seeing this film I doubt you'll stop thinking about it for days to come.
Walk the Line stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and is the biopic of blues legend Johnny Cash. Its directed by James Mangold who made Ford V. Ferrari in 2019. Witherspoon and Phoenix perform all of the music themselves and they are of course great actors that come together to create a dramatic, entertaining film. It has to be up there with the best music biopics of all time.
The first two and best two of my favorite director, Christopher Nolan's take on the batman are in my opinion the best super hero movies of all time. Christian Bale as the batman, Liam Neeson as Roz Al-Ghul, and Heath Ledger as the Joker are its most notable stars. It was these movies, and specifically Ledger's performance as the Joker, that first made me love movies and make this website for you guys.
Clerks is an extremely 90's comedy directed by Kevin Smith and stars Brian O'Holloran and Jeff Anderson. I avoided Clerks for a while because I am not a big black and white movie fan, and the description didn't grab me but boy was I wrong. The film is basically a raunchy sit-com about a bunch of things that happen and conversations that occur mostly inside of one convenience store and you can't do something like that any better than this. Its hilarious, the performances and writing is great and overall a great film. I strongly recommend it.
The Oceans Films are directed by Steven Soderbergh and star George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Don Cheadle, Alan Arkin, and many more. Yes... all of those people. Before watching this bank heist movie, I wondered how they could make a cast like this work but I trusted Soderbergh could pull it off and he most definitely did. All of the actors' charismas are on the screen and make some of the most entertaining movies of all time. And great ones at that. The second two are a reasonably large step down from the first but all are still worth a watch.
The Others is directed by Alejandro Amenábar and stars Nicole Kidman. It is a horror film, but not at all a conventional one, about basically the most overprotective, religious mom in history. She moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. The Others has a top 5 plot twist ending of all time that makes you want to rewatch it from a different perspective the second you finish it.
Rolling Stone Magazine as well as many other critics have revered The Sopranos as the greatest TV series of all time. It follows the life of Tony Soprano, Mob boss, father, and therapist patient. We watch as he attempts, and usually fails at balancing his “families” and get to witness his candid inner thoughts in his therapy sessions. The Sopranos, similar to Game of Thrones and The Wire, gives you characters you love and others that you love to hate. The Sopranos has twists and turns throughout that will never have you bored, yet you will never see its end coming, literally.
Agreed by many critics as a top 3 show of all time, The Wire is a must watch. While being a very entertaining, heartbreaking, and almost too realistic, it is an important show for people to see, especially those as privileged as us. It takes place in the projects of early 2000’s Baltimore and focuses on the narcotics scene and police enforcement. The Wire started the career of many actors such as Idris Elba and Michael B. Jordan. We fall in love with characters and hate others with a passion. The Wire is most definitely Binge-worthy.
Game of Thrones takes you to the magical, disastrous, and dangerous world of Westeros. Game of Thrones is never scared to surprise you and is nothing like any show you have ever seen. It has characters you love to love, but almost more so it has characters you love to hate. For those who have seen the show there is one young king in particular I know we are all thinking about. Game of Thrones will have you hooked after the first episode and will be impossible to put down. Although it had an underwhelming end it does not take away from the greatness of the show.
The first season of True Detective was superb sporting great performances from its leads Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as detectives Marty Hart and Rust Cohle. The show deeply builds their characters as it is slow moving and you find yourself truly invested as it swiftly jumps between timelines up until its satisfying end. There is a very cinematic, 6 minute long tracking shot with no cuts following detective Cohle as he is undercover that completely blew me away in the fourth episode. True Detective runs its seasons where there is a new case and different cast each season and each season has its own conclusion. So even though I am suggesting True Detective I am more so suggesting season 1 and 3 which recently arrived and seems to have found its footing again, However, season 2 was severely miscast and did not have the magic that the 1st season had.
The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm are the funniest shows I have ever seen. Seinfeld creator, Larry David, also created, writes, and stars as himself in Curb. Season 10 was just released this January and continues to follow the daily life of Larry as he displays relatable idiosyncrasies of situations and people that we also encounter in our daily lives, except Larry never refrains from pointing them out. Larry gets caught up in awkward situations, with pretty much everyone he encounters, and it is cringe-worthy to watch especially because the show is improvised, giving it a realistic feel, but it is impossible not to keep watching. Perfect recurring characters and A-List guest stars make Curb truly Binge-worthy!
Westworld is a technologically advanced amusement park taking its visitors to the Wild-West where robots known as “hosts” surround its visitors and allow them to do whatever they want without negative consequences…or does it? Its futuristic, but also Wild-West vibe allows for cool contrasting visuals. Westworld stars Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, Golden Globe winner Ed Harris as well as Jeffery Wright, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden. It is a ton of fun and its suspense keeps you on your toes every single episode. Also, season 3 just premiered!
Rick and Morty is a brainy, hilarious raunchy animated show that I'm sure everyone has heard of by now. It is probably my favorite at the moment of its family of raunchy animated shows. Rick, the smartest man in the world is an old scientist who moves back into his daughters home after 20 years and goes on adventures across the universe with his infinite assortment of machines and gadgets usually with his grandson Morty and sometimes his granddaughter Summer. Unlike The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park it has a moving plot and is by far the smartest one. The characters are great, and it is
